Hi there, First of all I would like to complement u on an excellent site
which u haff created. I must say that u heleped me a lot in comprehending all
the history text i was forced to read in doing my history module. It was very
organised and all the infomation are easy to comprehend. Thanks once again.
I would like to suggest if its not too bad of an idea that u add an extension
to the history of india to more of a forum or rather a discussion on certain
historical issues especially where politics is concern and where people and
even u urself can post ur opinion on how u perceive the whole thing (e.g: how
close was the accusation that the fast carried by Gandhi was more of an emotional
blackmail..etc) and .. well it would be nice if you could add some info about
Jinnah or at least try to view it from both sides because the independence of
India cannot be summarised by Gandhi alone though he may have a lot to do with
it.... nevertheless these are just suggestions. Still I simply am grateful to
have come across your site! esp since there is other dimension to it such as
the entertainmant sites esp the cinema..i adore hindi movies So.. keep up with
the good work and i would love to see the site again when it updates

I served on the Corry from Feb 71 to Aug 1972. I ran the ship's store. HM2 Bettis, I remember you well. My brother, MM2 Steve Cloos also served on board at the same time. He was discharged in December 1972. I reaffiliated with the Navy Reserves in 1988 and am a Senior Chief Steelworker in the Seabees. I have almost 21 years in the Navy Reserves.
I have our 1971-1972 Med Cruise Book and look at it from time to time. Some of the names from the supply dept: DK2 Smith, SK3 Scagid, SK2 Whiffen, SH2 Arndt, CS1 Vazquez, CS1 Crocker, CS3 Brooks, CSSN Jackson, SH3 Allen, LTJG Vorhoff.
Hey, Bill Shaughnessy, your picture is on the last page of the cruise book toasting the navy with a glass of beer!!

Gail and I wish to thank everyone for their cards, phone calls, e-mails and general concern during my recent surgery and recovery. I am getting stronger everyday, just didn't think it would take so long. The doc says in about 3 months (from the date of the surgery) I should be feeling better than I did in the last few years. Again, thanks, I am priviledged to be part of such a great group of shipmates.
The treasurer's report is late (from 9-30-02 through 12-3l-02) due to my surgery but will get it out ASAP. In the meantime please send in your $20 dues (if you have not already done so) since they were payable on February 1. Will get membership cards out with Gail's help. Thanks, again, Wayne

TAPS: Shipmate Glen W. Tierney was laid to rest on January 15,2003. Glen was constantly providing me with Corry shipmates names, addresses and email addresses over the last few years. He was an ET3 and served aboard the Corry in 1960-61. Although the USS Merideth was "his" ship he unselfishly provided me with info on Corry sailors. I always told Glen when I met him I would buy him a drink for all his good efforts for our Assn. I am having a drink in his honor right now. I will miss him.Jim

Ahoy, Shipmates ..
You’re invited to visit my Web site at barnaclesworld.com
which includes a special page dedicated to the destroyer
USS Damato (DD-871) and to the sacrifices made by so many
Navy veterans of all the great wars and conflicts.
BARNACLESWORLD.COM is a project under construction, as
is the Damato page included within the overall site. I’m new at Web page design, so I’m sure there are bugs to be found and improvements to made.
Your comments and suggestions are welcome.
Thanks

CUBAN BLOCKADE MEDAL: I just received my Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. The Corry was origionally ruled ineligible for the Medal because of boiler problems that
caused us to pull into Kingston,Jamaica for repairs. If my memory is correct,we were on the Blockade for 30 some days, a couple of days in Kingston and back out for 40 more days.
The origional ruling was that the ship had to be on the Blockade for 45 or more days. Saw an article in Tin Can Sailors mag. that Corry was awarded the Medal and I applied. Only took about 18 months,ha ha. They also sent me
the National Defense Medal.Jim

I just stumbled across this poem I wrote about the CORRY way back on April 20th, 1981. I thought some of you shipmates might find it amusing... It's titled "The Last Mission of USS CORRY (DD 817)
December morning, put to see
The Tonkin Gulf our destiny
The weather like our ship of gray
Was cold as ice, and underway
Twin screws churning, fantail foam
Waving farewell, we left home
Southward bound to Panama
The chill gave way to sunburned thaw
Then Pacific, peaceful lay
Deep blue beauty, sunny day
And looking out across the glare
No sign of land, not anywhere
We pulled in Pearl, then Subic Bay
It seemed like breifings, every day
And breaches loaded with destruction
Two machine guns, new construction
At final breifing, Yankee Station
Was to be assigned location
Then that day of eerie calm
Underway, to Vietnam
General Quarters! Battle Stations!
All hands in assigned locations
Cruising up so close to shore
I swear, I heard the VC snore
Seventeenth - Eighteenth parallel
That old tin can sure gave 'em hell
And Charlie screamed and ran in fear
At point blank range, he disappeared
Then we fired in the DMZ
And at the living in Quang Tri
And up the coast, and Quaviet
The body count was higher yet
And early in that morning light
The bodies floating, deathly sight
For seven months we kept that pace
Around the clock, more lives to waste
Then finally the word came down
Not to fire another round
All hands rejoiced, the end was here
To Singapore, for Tiger beer!
But R and R received delay
We ran aground while underway
With skipper relieved and spirits low
To dry-dock, Subic, engines slow
Finally, the word was passed
That we were heading home at last
And while on route, command decision
Corry's fate was decommision
For she was old and battle wrought
From all the missions she had fought
A vintage warship now, she'd be
Retiring to the mothball fleet
But I'll remember better days
On board the CORRY, guns ablaze
And though, for now, just recognition
She served with pride, that final mission

I got orders to the CORRY from my tour with the Marines. I checked aboard in 1971 and fell instantly in love with her. Sure, she tossed and pitched, but, I loved every minute of it! The rougher, the better. Rarely was she in port for long and for an adventurous soul, CORRY was heaven. I used to say, "I can get anywhere on this ship in 30 seconds!" And I loved my Sick Bay... And the crew... And all the adventures we had. Our Motto was "I may be old, but I can still hump it!" CORRY was true to her word and sailed the seven seas. I salute all you shipmates, fore and aft. God, what a beautiful old ship she was! I used to go up on the signal bridge in high seas to enjoy the rolls... And the roughest seas I ever saw, were off the coastline of Algeria where we rode the waves, or rather, surfed on them... I hope ships go to heaven too... I'd like to see her again...

Gail and I will be on vacation for 12 days beginning August 13 and returning the 24th. Just wanted everyone to know that we will get all receipts for money sent in for the reunion after we return. This is a reminder that we do have to have the money by August 31 in order to firm up the tour bus and the banquet. Reunion fee is $50 PER PERSON and tour is $30 PER PERSON. I know some people are not arriving until Friday and will not be able to go on the tour but if you have sent in your reunion fee money and not your tour money please do so ASAP. Once we reserve the buses or drop off a bus we will not be able to get another one. It won't be long now until the shipmates are together talking about old times. Looking forward to October.

Does anyone know what became of Capt. A.P. Porcaro? He was Captain while I was on board 1973-1975. I had a lot of respect for him even though I had to do 3 days in the brig, bread and water. I am saddened to hear of the USS Corry's demise at the Turkish scrap yard. I am very proud to have served on her and have many great memories while serving as Weapons Yeoman from 1969 to 1971. The Med cruise and several Caribbean cruises were great experiences and the training has served me the rest of my life. We talked to our coordinator at Hotel Roanoke and found out there are now 35 rooms booked for the reunion. This is a great turnout. She informed us that 15 rooms remain and that as of September 2, 2002 all remaining rooms will be dropped off. If anyone after that date wants to reserve a room at the hotel it will be on an availability basis only and she cannot guarantee the $109 per night rate. We encourage anyone who is planning to attend the reunion and has not made reservations to please get them in ASAP. A reunion newsletter is being mailed out within a week with updates about the reunion and directions to the hotel. These letters will be sent out to members who have booked at the hotel. Thanks and looking forward to seeing everyone in October.

We will be sending out a card or letter with more reunion info sometime in mid July to all shipmates who have registered at the hotel. If you plan to attend please register ASAP as we will have to start dropping off rooms by August 1st. We still have about 20 rooms left. Looking forward to seeing everyone in October. Wayne and Gail

We have just put a new website on the Corry's LINKS.It is the National Geographic website for D-DAY.It has remberences
by those who served that day. Some of them served on the USS Corry DD 463,the 2nd ship of the USN to have that name. We are the 3rd ship to have the name.Read the remeberences of Grant Gullickson and Richardson. It makes you feel proud to have served on a USN ship to have the same name. I think it is time for a 4th USS Corry.

I was on Corry as RDSN in 1965 and for the Med criuse and before that the side trip to the Domican Republic crises of the Spring of 65. Joined the ships assoc. a few months back and looking forward to the reunion in Oct. Doubt there will be many I will know but it will be fun anyway.I seem to have missed the reunion here in Annapolis. Didn't know of it. I guess the local paper was meant for reading before we wrap the crabs in it.( it is called the "crab wrapper") I left Corry in Jan 66 and went to New DD818 for 2 years another Med trip, Gitmo and West Pac. My first of 3. I later served on Morton DD948 ( the saltiest ship in the Navy) in Pearl Harbor for 4 years. Also a member of Morton ship association, SCV, PLPOW and several car (Ford) and truck clubs. So many things and so little time, but I am having fun. Ahoy Rick Palmer Annapolis Maryland.

To Charlie Horvath
If you can come to this years reunion, think about bringing that new squeezebox you purchased while in the Med.(56-57).,then you could serenade the troops like you used to do on ships transfering fuel, oil or persons alongside the Corry. The only other thing I would ask is instead of playing the 100 versions of Lady of Spain that I could invariably pick out of just about every song played, you learn a new song.
Thanks Charlie

Hello everyone, hope by now everyone has received their newsletter sent out a week ago about the dues and reunion updates. One clarification about the reunion fee of $50. This is PER PERSON as stated in the reunion package sent out in September. The fee includes your get together reception on Thursday night (food will be enough for a meal), your breakfast on Saturday morning with refreshements being served through until 12:00, the banquet dinner on Saturday night which will be prime rib plus a fish and/or chicken dish and all the trimmings and beer will be furnished with a cash bar for anything else. Also, a hospitality room will be furnished for you for the entire reunion with soft drinks, coffee and light snacks served. This is an exceptional value for our members because the organization is picking up part of the costs through your dues. The dues are starting to come in now for 2002 and we thank all who have already sent their's in. A few have sent in their reunion fee but we will not deposit these for several months. Remember the $50 PER PERSON is due by August 15th as well as the $30 PER PERSON for the tour to VMI, Lexington and the D-Day Memorial. This tour includes lunch. Please hold on to the two reunion letters that have been sent out to refer back to. There will be a post card sent out as a reminder sometime in June or July to the members who have booked reservations at the hotel. Thanks and hope to see each of you in October. Wayne

We made a 30 Day Cruise to the North Atlantic (Operation Strong Express)in November. On Thanksgiving, I "reappropriated" the Turkey from the Officer's Galley, prior to their meal. I shared it with the Signalman and Radarmen who were later change to "Operatin Specialists"...

Gail and I are working on the tour for the D-Day Memorial, Natural Bridge and possibly VMI/Lexington area with our contact at Hotel Roanoke. Hopefully within a couple of months we will have info out to you on final plans, costs, etc. I hope all of you are making your reservations as quickly as possible for the 2002 reunion. Click on Hotel Roanoke website and get those reservations in. I know this is early but we have had 57 shipmates respond that they will be attending this reunion (would make this the best attendance to date) and we have reserved only 60 rooms. We based this on the number of yes responses we received when the reunion info was sent out back in Sept. October is Hotel Roanoke's busiest month so don't know if any more rooms would be available. So, get those reservations in early so you won't miss out!
Also, 2002 dues are payable by February 1st. We have been getting some dues already (thanks to you all who get them in early). The dues are still $20 per year and this goes to offset some of the costs of the reunion, mailings including newsletters, upkeep of this website and various other things for the membership. Please send your check for dues to USS Corry Association, c/o Wayne Owens, Treasurer, 5552 Heather Hill Drive, Roanoke, VA 24019. A card will be sent out soon as a reminder especially for those do not have website access. If you have paid your dues already thanks and please disregard this notice. Looking forward to seeing all of you in Roanoke in October and HAPPY NEWYEAR to all my fellow shipmates!

Served aboard the Corry from Feb. 1952 to middle of 1953, was aboard when the Hobson was sunk by the aircraft carrier, was on the Med cruise and also the carribean. I was a Hosp. Corpsman striker and also a part of the deck crew during the Med cruise. I just loved finding this site.

I just emailed the Webmaster a picture taken of Corry shipmates in 1961 or 1962. In the picture,2nd from the left is Mickey Hogan.Mickey died on the Corry in an accident in the Sky Forward gun director while we were on a Med.Cruise in 1962.I can't put a name to the faces, but they look familiar.Third from the right is a 2nd class cook who's name I don't remember. If you can put names to these faces,it may be some of our current shipmates in the Assn.,
get in touch with me. Mickey's sister would appreciate the names. She sent me the picture.Hope to have the picture up soon, probably on the "Memories"page.
Thanks

Gail and Wayne Owens, hosts for the Roanoke reunion Oct.,2002 will be sending additional information sometime in the next month. We have 50 rooms set aside and I recommend
booking early. We will not be able to get additional rooms in August or September. Please book early and make Gail and Wayne's job easier.
Also I have been hearing from shipmates that there are too few Guest Book entries. I encourage all to post a comment and liven up the site.
Thanks, Jim
